becos people make films to learn the craft not to distribute them and make a fast buck at your expense

personly i wouldnt have a problem with it if i was an artist. why sould i expect some 15 year old with a camcorder to pay me royalties becos he used my song on a movie with his mates in it that 20 people at most are going to see??

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Me neither- mainly becasue I'd never find out about it in the first place. But with this topic starting out as:

Does anybody know about any online community where you can upload/download amateur movies?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">... I believe the issue is films that will be accessible to internet users not just family and friends- which is where the problems can begin. I think it's important that people understand that.

Thanks a lot for your opinions! I know it's a bad idea to use copyrighted music if I want a lot of people to see it but yea.. copyright's a b1tch. I've got a friend who's a composer and I know he'd be happy to help me out.. it's just that I had a system crash a few weeks ago and all I have left is the finished movie (and of course the unedited raw footage). The Premiere project is gone, so I'd have to re-edit the whole thing if I wanted to put another song in the movie. But I guess I could to that If any of you wanna see it I could just send it by MSN Messenger or whatever.. I just can't find a web space provider without too much file size / file type / bandwidth limits.

that's a tough break about the system crash, i sympathize totally....if you have a composer friend then you're well away. i am sure you won't have the same problem with your next project.

and belovedmonster, i don't think many people would have a problem with a young filmmaker using songs to help him along with learning the craft, i certainly wouldn't, as long as my permission has been given.....but the use of music is an important part of that craft, and one which shouldn't be ignored or misused.

i don't want to be the bad guy here, i am sure if i needed to bend the rules occasionally i would....i just think it is important that the issue of illegally using others people work and broadcasting it on the net are raised.

i just get irritated at the huge amount of people who seem totally happy to stitch up my fellow musicians....the other day i saw a post where someone advised another filmmaker to get a local band to cover the songs he wanted to use, but change them slighty to try to evade copyright!! (way to get sued)

music is an important part of filmmaking, and i think it should be treated that way.

(climbs back down off soapbox)
